THE PROCESS

Our Studio

Our little tailoring studio is located on our family farm in Chalata, Zambia.

It is a small space off our Farm House. Here our tailor cuts and sews the bags, and I check, pack, and ship out all the orders, as well as run our social media and online shop.

Unique Fabrics

If you have ever visited our beautiful Zambia, It is impossible that you haven't seen, bought, or even worn the local 'Chitenge'.

A chitenge is a colourful patterned 2 meter or more piece of fabric used by the locals. The women wear it  wrapped around their waist as a skirt or chest as a dress, or even make them into a fancy dress with all the frills and trimmings. They also make them into shirts and trousers for men to wear. The most common use of the chitenge is for tying your baby on your back, and when the chitenge is worn out they even cut them up and use them as nappies.

It is an essential part of the culture.

Our Absolute favourite part is the trips to the markets to find the local Chitenge Material, meeting the lovely ladies with their piles of fabric and supporting their families with our purchases. We go in search of colourful ones with unique patterns, there is a wide range of colours and patterns even political figures get printed onto the fabric for people to wear. The Chitenge changes every year so you will never have the same bag made from the same fabric, each Chitenge bag is one of a kind.

Tailors

We usually have about one to two tailors working on your orders and stock, they are very gifted at sewing and have been making Great North Bags for years as a way to provide for them and their families.
